Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Alabama, Spring Break, Winter, Fall Fishing

Alabama Off Season Charters:  Alabama's Charter Boats other most popular fishing season begins in September and goes through the fall and winter.  Our winters are usually mild and offer some great near shore trolling for King Mackerel, Jack Crevalle and Spanish Mackerel up until the end of October.  November is the beginning of our winter season and we start red fishing.  We call them bull reds down here.  We catch them best during November, December, January, February and March of each year.  These monster bull reds weigh between 10 to 30 pounds each.  They hit bait on top water by sight casting and also trolling.  Either way, you will have a blast catching these red fish.  The best time to catch them is just after a frontal passage with a Northerly wind.

Orange Beach, Alabama Trolling Fishing Trips

Alabama Saltwater trolling trips are trips that keep clients closer to land than the reef fishing trips and are usually 4 hours in length.   Some are 6 hours.   Since there are no  artificial reefs near the shore, we usually target species of fish that are migratory in nature.  These trolling trips are ideal for those family anglers that do not want to spend a lot of time on the water, on a tight budget, first timers or want to have a lot of fun trolling along the shoreline of Alabama's gulf coast.

Saltwater Trolling Trips - Trolling fishing trips are where saltwater anglers do not fish at the same time.  Your mate will usually put out 4 or 5 lines behind the boat pulling lures or baits in the shallow water along the gulf shores until we get a strike.  Anglers have to take turns reeling them in because sometimes we only get one bite at a time.  Sometimes we get a double hook up.  That is when fishing can get really exciting and sometimes explosive.  The fish don't always swim straight when hooked.  Fish will sometimes cross lines with each other and that is when it's exciting.

Alabama Seasonal Trolling Fishing- Depending on the time of the year, different species of fish may be available to catch during a trolling trip.  Spring Break is usually when we see an increase in business and the migratory fish start arriving.  The first fish that shows up is the Spanish Mackerel.  Spanish are beautiful and give a good fight on light tackle trolling trips.  There is no limit on them but we sometimes have to hunt for the school.   During the Summer vacation months, King Mackerel show up and they stay around until the end of October.  Winter fishing is one of the best opportunities to take a 4 hour trolling trip.  We target bullreds.  They are also called redfish or red drum.  These fish offer a great light tackle fight all Winter long up until March.  As you can see, we have year-round trolling trips available for anglers of all ages.

Orange Beach, Alabama Natural and Artificial Reef Fishing

Alabama Bottom Fishing and Artificial Reef Fishing - Reef Fishing trips are one of the most diverse saltwater fishing trips an angler can take in the Gulf of Mexico.  Since there are no artifical reefs near the shore, we have to ride further offshore to get to our artificial and natural reefs.   These trips are usually 6, 8 hours in length.   These light tackle reef fishing trips are for anglers that either want to have a lot of action on a short trip or go for the whole enchilada and go way out and fish for more variety.

Everyone Fishes At The Same Time - Saltwater reef fishing trips are for those who want everyone to fish at the same time.  Each angler is given a light tackle pole and gets into a position along the rail of the charter boat.  You bait your hook and drop your line below the boat.  The reef fish will see the bait and take a bite.  They fight like crazy trying to get back down to the reef to seek shelter.  It is your job as an angler to laugh, grunt and try to get the fish to the top without breaking the light tackle line.  It is not uncommon to catch a fish almost every drop.  It is common to have all six anglers hooked up at the same time.

Alabama Year-round Reef Fishing - We have great year-round reef fishing.  We do have to contend with fishing seasons and species closures.  For instance, Red Snapper is the easiest fish to catch on artifical reefs.  They have a season of usually June 1 to August 4.  Harvesting them any other time of the year is prohibited.  You can catch them if you like, but you will have to release them.  We also now have seasonal closure on some species of grouper.  We can catch Amberjack, Black Snapper, White Snapper, Vermilion Snapper, Shark and Triggerfish all year long.  Depending on the length of your trip, all species above might not be available because of the reef structure and fishing pressure.

Orange Beach, Alabama Saltwater Sight Fishing

Alabama Saltwater Sight Fishing - Some saltwater anglers don't care about trolling or reef fishing.  Anglers have seen outdoor shows where saltwater guides are on a small boat poling along the flats looking for fish that might be seen from the surface.  We are a big boat and we can't get up into the bays and fish like small boats.  We simply incorporate sight fishing with what is available near shore and are often 4 to 6 hours in length.

Sightcasting Fishing Requires Patience - Sightcasting near shore is a specialty style of fishing.  It is not for everyone.  These trips are Sportfishing and just like trophy deer hunting, sometimes do not produce fish.  We sight fish by putting the angler in the tuna tower above the boat, up on the bow or can stand on the stern.  We use the tower to get the angler way above the water to be able to see further away to see the fish or schools of fish we are targeting.

Sightfishing for Cobia, Redfish & Mackerel - During the Spring, the Cobia start running and putting an angler in the tower lets us cover a lot more water searching for these trophy sized fish.  During the Winter, the Redfish school up with thousands on the top at times.  We can ride up to the school and let you cast into them.  During the summer months, we can pull up to a school of Bonita and let you cast a small jig into the smalles member of the tuna family.

As you can see, sightfishing is at best a trip for a single or double angler who has patience to wait for the big one.   It is also a trip for those who want the option of catch and release. If you have kids or people that want to catch fish every drop of the line, you might think about booking our 6 hour or longer reef fishing trip.

Saltwater Jigging Fishing Trips In Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Alabama Saltwater Jigging Fishing - Saltwater jig fishing is a technique and requires a lot of work for the angler.  It is different from other types of fishing.  It can be combined with reef fishing or sight casting trips.  Jigging fishing can be the most rewarding fishing sportfishermen can do.

Types of Jigs and Jig Fishing - There are many types of jigs made.  Some are simple and inexpensive.  Some are fancy and expensive.  The most common and the oldest jig is a hook made into a lead head.  Over the years, the lead heads have been painted different colors and have even had eyes added.  Some have skirts tied on.  Some are fished with a plastic curly tails attached on the hook end.  Berkly gulp baits now make them for reef fishing that have scents added for extra fish attraction.

Special Jigs Catch Big Fish - One of the most expensive jigs are the Butterfly jigs.  Some are long and slender.  Some are short and flat.  Shimano and Williamson are two manufacturers that make them.  These cost between $11 to $25 each with hooks.  As you can see, this is the elite of all the lures.   We use them quite a bit and don't charge our anglers if they lose one.

Jig fishing or jigging produces fish like Amberjack, Grouper,Tuna, Snapper and Mackerel.

Saltwater Fly Fishing In Orange Beach, Alabama

Alabama Saltwater Fly Fishing - Saltwater fly fishing is something we allow our clients to do.  We do not own any fly fishing equipment, but you are welcome to bring your 6 to 9 weight fly fishing gear for some great mackerel or redfishing.  We understand that there are sportsmen out there that would love to hook and fight a saltwater fish on light fly fishing tackle.

Sight Fishing With Flies - We can combine saltwater fly fishing with any of the sight fishing or reef fishing trips.  We have customers that bring their own tackle and have a blast.   Depending on if they use a sinking fly or a floating fly, they catch Snapper, Mackerel, Cobia, Bonita and Redfish.  Cobia will probably be 9 to 11 weight gear.  Either way, bring your fly rods and have some fun after you have caught a few on conventional tackle.
